"Grey's Anatomy" will be returning with all-new episodes and exciting storylines for Season 12. While Season 11 gave many fans a shocker following Derek's (Patrick Dempsey) sudden death, many are still hoping that the show will bring back several characters from previous seasons.
Katherine Heigl, who starred in the ABC series as Izzie, is one of the few fan favorite characters who suddenly left the show without giving any closure to her love story with Alex (Justin Chambers). Speaking to TV Line, series creator Shonda Rhimes immediately shut down the hopes of many fans who wish to see Izzie back on the ABC series.
"No. I'm done with that story. I've turned that idea over in my mind a thousand times and thought about how it would go. And I don't think so," Rhimes said.
While fans may somehow need to move on from Izzie and Derek's sudden departure from the series, some began wondering if the show's upcoming season will be its last on TV. Carter Matt noted that there is a possibility for "Grey's Anatomy" to conclude in Season 12, but the outlet added that this would all depend on the show's ratings.
ABC head Paul Lee also seemed confident that the upcoming season will not the show's last, as Lee announced that he has already seen the drafts for Season 12 and has seen a lot of changes in the show. Lee added that he does not see any "reason to expect that [the series] will not go on for many, many years to come."
"Grey's Anatomy" Season 12 premieres on Sept. 24, 2015 on ABC.
