Apparently, killing Dereck was the only possible option for Grey's Anatomy's creator Shonda Rhimes. She's again trying to make sense of the show's shocking twist which led millions of fans in tears. Hollywood Life has the deets!
Although it's been three months since the character's death, Shonda is not yet done making fans understand why Patrick Dempsey's character had to die after 11 years on the series. Shonda talked to the Television Critics Association on August 4 and explained why she thought that it was the only way for the series to go, and how the tragic plot authenticates Dereck and Meredith's (Ellen Pompeo) eternal love.
"What were the options?" Shonda rhetorically asked the TCA audience. "Either Der was going to walk out on Mer and leave her high and dry, and what was that going to mean?"
Of course she wasn't really expecting anyone to give her an answer. "That would suggest the love wasn't true, the thing we had said for 11 years was a lie... Meredith and Derek's love had to remain Meredith and Derek's love. As painful as it was for me as a storyteller, the only way to preserve what felt true to me was Derek was going to have to die for that love to remain honest."
However, regardless the reason, it's undeniable how the death of one the show's most well loved characters ruined the show for some fans.
Fortunately, the upcoming 12th season of the top-rating series will be a little less tragic for Ellen's character, Meredith. "We do have this world in which Meredith is single, and she is living this life that she hadn't thought she was going to be living again," Shonda explains hinting what can be expected from the newest season.
While fans are still very much devastated with Dereck's (or 'McDreamy' as he is called on the show) permanent exit from the show, at least the future for Meredith is looking semi-bright.
