Slenderman Stabbing Case: Wisconsin Girls Await Verdict

The Slenderman stabbing case initially broke the news on May 31, 2014 after a passerby notified the Waukesha Police Department that then 12-year-year old, Peyton Leutner, was stabbed in the woods at a park. The girl was stabbed 19 times by her friends and was left there to bleed to death. Luckily she survived after she was treated in Waukesha Memorial Hospital.

The two girls, now 13-year-old Morgan Geyser and 13-year-old Anissa Weier, both from Waukesha, Wisconsin, who were accused of stabbing Peyton are facing charges of first-degree homicide in adult court and could face 65 years of jail time if they are convicted. At the time of their arrest, it was reported that the girls had said, they did it to please slender man who promised to take them to his mansion. One of them also added that if they did not do it, slenderman would have killed their family. On the other hand, if Waukesha County Circuit Judge Bohren move them into the juvenile system, they could be held for only five years and all records of the proceedings would be sealed.

Bohren's ruling is due this Monday and has been facing tough questions about young is too young to face adult consequences.

"It's obviously a very tough decision for him," said former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Janine Geske, who attended law school with Bohren. "They're very young. They clearly have some serious mental health issues. That pushes you toward putting them in juvenile court. But the crime is so severe."

Defense attorney for both girls argue that their clients are mentally ill and one attorney says that his client is a schizophrenic who believes in fictional characters like Harry Potter and Slenderman. The defense argues that if the girls will get the right treatment if they are moved to the juvenile system. The defense attorney believes that getting the girls out of adult court will worsen their mental condition.

On the other hand, prosecutors allege the girls had plotted for months to kill classmate Payton Leutner in the hopes to please slenderman. Disturbing evidence have been obtained by investigators from the bedroom of one of the girls. Whether these girls will be transferred to Juvenile Court System or convicted as adults for attempted homicide, the court will reach its verdict this Monday.
