'Pacific Rim 2' Cast News & Plot: Charlie Hunnam Confirmed to Reprise His Role; Other Familiar Faces to Appear

The sequel for the 2013 sci-fi film "Pacific Rim" has finally been confirmed and Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kukuchi are reported to most likely reprise their roles in the second film. According to Christian Post, Director Guillermo del Toro confirmed that "Pacific Rim 2" is now almost in its production phase.

The director also revealed in an interview that the second film will feature the original cast members who have survived the events of the last film. The title of the film is said to be "Pacific Rim 2: Maelstrom."

Jaeger pilots Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinki Kukuchi) are set to return along with Kaiju-obsessed scientists Dr. Gottlieb (Burn Gorman) and Dr. Newton Geizler (Charlie Day). Ron Perlman will also return as the black market privateer, Hannibal Chau.

Movie Pilot reported that the second film will begin just right after the events of the first "Pacific Rim." The second film will reportedly focus more on the epic monsters called "kaiju."

During the Television Critics Association panel, Del Toro, while promoting his television show, "The Strain," revealed that Day and Gorman's characters will be very important in the second film. Film co-writer Zak Penn also revealed that "Pacific Rim 2" will focus more on the origins of the "kaijus" and how they were able to cross through the dimensional portal called "the breach," which is located on the Pacific Ocean floor.

In the last film, Stacker Pentacost (Idris Elba) sacrificed himself and his Jaeger as it exploded a nuclear bomb to be able to close the portal. It was reported that this opens up to more possible plot twists over the future of the Jaeger and their pilots.

The film is expected to begin its production in November this year, and it is scheduled to be released on August 4, 2017.
