What NOT To Do When Decluttering

Clutter is a common problem in every household, no matter the living and space condition. That is exactly why we have shared with you numerous trips and tricks on how to combat clutter in your daily living. But this time, we will be looking at it in a different angle.

Here are 5 things that you should NOT do when decluttering according to Apartment Therapy:

Organize first, buy second

While those pretty bins, boxes and baskets at The Container Store are the cutest things ever, don't fall for the common mistake of cluttering your space with empty containers that you don't really know what to use for. Sort out your space first and identify the things you have and the perfect storage technique for each before going and get one.

Don't bite off more than you can chew

Instead of allotting an ENTIRE day organizing your WHOLE house, choose to do one project at a time for 2-3 hours a day. You are less likely to get frustrated and you will be more efficient if you could focus on one task or area of your space instead of spending an 8-hour stretch and feeling burned out at the end of the day.

Complete each task

DO IT NOW. There's no point having that huge box for donation full if you don't plan on bringing them to the donation center. You have already done so much work sorting things out so you might as well complete the deal and not have that huge box eating up space in your house.

Rome wasn't built in a day

Don't think about that big time reorganization as a onetime deal. Organizing your space and coming up with a logical and efficient system for processing and managing your possession is just a part of an ongoing autopilot which covers regular upkeep that you may have to do monthly. Don't feel bad if you still find yourself having to deal with clutter; just be glad that you have developed a new system that is more effective than the old one.

Good enough is enough

Don't feel like a failure if your closet doesn't look like those in the magazines or IKEA catalogues. Your closet is a functional space that is used by an actual human being, and not one that has a ready team of stylists to carefully stage it back after you hurriedly pull your favorite sweater from the pile.
