Showtime's "Homeland" is going to reinvent itself in Season 5. It was reported that the show will have an interesting plot and will look into Russian President Vladimir Putin and also the Muslim extremist group ISIS.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Showtime President David Nevins revealed that the first episode of Season 5 will feature the real deal with Russia. He added that the show will look into Putin.
Aside from that, he confirmed that the show will also deal with the infamous group ISIS. He said that this is a fresh story and he thinks that this theme will resonate with the people. Aside from Putin and ISIS, it was revealed that the show will also add some interesting elements like Charlie Hebdo and Edward Snowden, according to ABC News.
Nevins was also asked about the new set in Berlin wherein the show shot the full Season 5. He said that Berlin is sort of a crossroad which is between the old eastern and western block which is the boundary between the Western Europe and Muslim world. He added that it is a place where the strictest privacy laws in the world exist. They reportedly wanted to explore these themes and how the writers could link it all together.
In a previous interview, it can be recalled that showrunner Alex Gansa expressed his hesitation in involving ISIS in the show by saying it may be "too evil" to successfully dramatize it. However, Nevins assured viewers that the show will definitely touch the issue to be able to give a show that reflects the world that people live in. He also assured fans that "Homeland" is nowhere near its ending and that it could continue for several seasons more.
"Homeland" Season 5 premieres on October 4 at 9 p.m. on Showtime.
