Google recently announced that the company will have a new name - Alphabet. The rebrand is seen as a strategic move by the search giant. All its top money makers like the Google search engine, YouTube, Android, Google Maps, and all related products will still be under the Google brand while Alphabet will take control of other non-web related projects which its founder Larry Page calls 'moon shots', as mentioned in an article in wired.com From the name change, the spot light is now on Sundar Pichai who was tasked to lead Google as its new CEO.
Sundar is no stranger to Google and its inner workings. He was the senior vice-president for product before he was appointed CEO and his resume leaves no doubt that he is more than capable to run one of the most profitable companies in the world. According to a report in the guardian.com, documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission indicates "Since joining Google in 2004, Sundar has led a number of key consumer products which are now used by hundreds of millions of people and, prior to his current role, served as Google's SVP of Android, Chrome and Apps. He has a bachelor's degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, a master's degree from Stanford University, and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania."
Pichai will surely need to reach into his repertoire of skills as Google is facing extreme pressure from all fronts being the industry leader. Wired.com reported that Facebook is aggressively moving into YouTube's territory and is aiming to challenge in the in-app search business. Facebook Messenger, on the other hand, is already a complement to Gmail. Google is also worried about Amazon's increasing influence over online shoppers which poses a big threat to the current model of how people search the internet. If they do it directly on Amazon, Google will ultimately lose the battle.
