Verizon has completed the testing of its new technological innovation that could bring about 10 Gigabytes per second of internet connectivity to its customers. It is 10 times faster than Google Fiber and 1000 times faster than the internet connection of most U.S. homes.
10 Gigabytes per second of internet connection will mean that it will only take you eight seconds to download a full two-hour high definition (HD) movie, two seconds of download time for textbooks (even if 100 students are downloading it simultaneously), and two seconds to download 1000 pictures.
Verizon believes that the new technology in optic fiber connection can reach up to 40 to 80 Gigabytes per second when its maximum potential and capacity is realized.
The new technology works just by "adding additional colors of light" to the fiber optic cable network that Verizon is presently using.
"The advantage of our FiOS network is that it can be upgraded easily by adding electronics onto the fiber network that is already in place," said Lee Hicks, Verizon vice president of network technology. "Deploying this exciting new technology sets a new standard for the broadband industry and further validates our strategic choice of fiber-to-the-premises," said Hicks.
Verizon already tested the new innovation in internet connection in their lab. They also conducted a field test to a home and a business establishment stretching for almost three miles from their main office.
In a news release by PRNewsWire, it states there that "(t)he trial ... consisted of a new optical line terminal (OLT) installed in the Verizon central office, generating four wavelengths, or colors of light, each capable of operating at 10G/2.5G. Later versions are envisioned to support the same download and upload speeds of 10G/10G per color. One test transmitted the NG-PON2 signals over a fiber serving live GPON customers proving that the network can simultaneously deliver GPON and NG-PON2 on the same fiber." This report is according to Vincent O'Byrne, Ph.D., director of access technology for Verizon.
Fiber-optic technology is the newest and fastest trend in terms of internet connectivity. At present, the fastest internet speed is two Gigabytes per second hosted by Comcast.
