Former Palo Alto mayor, cornerstone of Newmark Cornish and Carey, and key figure in the commercial development of Silicon Valley, Scott T. Carey, has died on Aug. 11 at his home in Portola Valley surrounded by his family. His passing away at the age of 82 followed a brief illness.
Scott Carey was born on March 11, 1933 in Oakland to parents Paul T. Carey, a graphic artist, and Stanleigh Carey, a classical pianist performing with local groups. He, with his brother Peter Carey, grew up in Berkeley.
Carey received his Law degree in 1961 from the School of Law in the University of California, Berkeley. He served as a pilot for the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1957, and even reached the rank of a captain.
In 1968, Scott Carey joined his uncle Pat Carey's real estate brokerage. This was where he met his wife, Susan, who was working as a real estate agent.
During his stay in the real estate company, he became president, CEO, and then Chairman. Carey turned the real estate company into one of the most prominent commercial real estate brokerage in the country.
He also served as a councilman and a mayor in Palo Alto City for four years, from 1975 to 1979. He was fundamental in winning the council support for the acquisition of 500 acres of land in the lower foothill worth $7.5 million.
In addition, he attended as an organizer and attorney for the Economic Opportunity Council of Northern Santa Clara County, as a member of the Santa Clara County Land Use Commission, as a board member of Woodside Priory School and, more recently, as an advisory member of the board to the Berkeley Center for Law, Business and the Economy.
