Adult Swim just renewed animated adult science fiction sitcom 'Rick and Morty' for its third season after its successful Season 2 premiere where it posted triple digit gains in the 18-49, 18-34 and 18-24 viewer demographics when compared to the first episode of the first season.
This TV series is like a blend of 'Futurama,' 'South Park,' 'American Dad,' and 'The Simpsons.'
According a news report by Entertainment Weekly, the series, created and executively produced by Community producer Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, features the sociopathic scientist Rick Sanchez (voiced by Roiland) as he brings his good-hearted and easily distressed grandson Morty Smith (also voiced by Roiland) on random adventures across the universe.
Based on the report of Deadline, Harmon said in a statement that: "(i)t's an honor to see Rick and Morty joins the exclusive club of shows with over nineteen episodes." Harmon went on to say that, "(i)t's time to demand that the network allow us to draw the characters going to Hawaii."
"I am blown away by the seemingly instant success of 'Rick and Morty.' I look forward to continuing their adventures!" said Roiland.
In Season 2, Rick Sanchez still lives in the home of his daughter Beth (Sarah Chalke) and is causing more trouble and is facing new problems with the rest of the family, including with his son-in-law Jerry (Chris Parnell) and granddaughter Summer (Spencer Grammer).
The news has been released after a much-speculated cancellation of the Community series after Harmon's interview with The Hollywood Reporter, though it is more likely that a movie is going to be released theatrically than a TV release of a seventh season.
Harmon will also be busy with an upcoming TV show pilot commissioned by the cable network IFC, where he will host and executively produce. The show will feature different comedians playing the "greatest minds" in world history like Benjamin Franklin, Albert Einstein and Eleanor Roosevelt.
Season 2 of 'Rick and Morty' continues to air Sundays on cable channel Adult Swim.
