"Allegiant" co-stars Theo James and Shailene Woodley recently opened up about Tris' death in the upcoming sequel. In an interview with Digital Spy, Woodley said that Tris' death is a beautiful decision made by book author Veronica Roth.
"I think that it's a beautiful decision that Veronica made. I mean, how often is it that somebody you really admire and who does take selfless risks everyday ends up living," she said.
James added that Tris' demise in the movie and in the book is necessary because the character has always been about self-sacrifice. "Tris' character is, it's all about self-sacrifice. It would be strange if you just saw Four and her in the end like smoking cigars and hanging out with their kids and their dog," he said.
In "Allegiant," Tris will die after attempting to save everyone.
During a separate interview with Vulture, Roth also explained her decision to stick with the original story that featured Tris' death. In the past, fans have already filed a petition on Change.org urging the writer to reconsider the movie's ending.
"I talked to Shailene Woodley about how she reacted to the ending, and she really enjoyed the way that it ended. I don't know. I wrote 'Allegiant' that way because I thought that was the way it needed to be told, and so I feel very strongly about it, obviously," Roth said.
The "Divergent" and "Insurgent" author also acknowledged how fans also feel very strongly against the death of Tris in the movie.
"I know people feel strongly about it too and that's fine. They're allowed to feel however they want to feel about it. I haven't seen how they are going to end it. But I don't think they'll do two endings. I don't think anyone's ever done that!" she said.
"Allegiant - Part 1" is slated to hit theaters in the United States on Mar. 18, 2016.
