'Spanish Super Cup': 'Athletic Bilbao' Beats Barcelona Ending Their 31 Years of Title Drought

The 31 year trophy drought was ended by Athletic Bilbao after a draw at Nou Camp with Barcelona was recorded.

Athletic Club or commonly known as Athletic Bilbao finally won their first trophy in 31 years as 1-1 draw was secured in the Spanish Super Cup over European and Spanish champion Barcelona cup with a 5-1 aggregate victory. The road to victory was not that sure for this winning team, for after their stunning 4-0 home win last Friday in the first leg, still Barcelona threatened a comeback when Lionel Messi scored on a setup by Luis Suarez a minute before the halftime during the second leg. However, such flicker of hope, diminished when Barcelona's center-back Gerard Piqué received a red card for screaming in face. And such incident helped Aritz Aduriz tie the game score 1-1 in the 74th minute.

Bilbao who had not won a title since 1984 since beating Barcelona in that period in Copa del Rey final is very happy and triumphant after the hardships. Coach Eernesto Valverde of Bilbao was quoted by nytimes saying that;

"We have been waiting for this for a long time. Generations of players have passed through Athletic since those league and cup titles of the 1980s. We knew it would arrive eventually."

On an interview via Tele 5 and as reported by foxnews, goal scorer of the Spanish super cup, Aritz Aduriz also shared the same sentiments with his coach and fellow teammates as he remarked that;

"It is impossible to write a script like that. Winning a title is the greatest thing that can happen to us and against Barcelona. It's incredibly satisfying to win a title with Athletic. For me it is the most we can hope for We have something special that makes us strong. For us, this is amazing. The happiest day of my life was the birth of my daughter but apart from that [today is the happiest day]. Many years we have not held anything in Bilbao and people of two or three generations ago deserve this."
