"The Fosters" Season 3 is reaching its halfway point with the latest episode, an episode that was said could be a source for closure with regards to the adoption storyline. It could also blow things up in another way. A large part of the episode would also need to come down to how they want to present Callie and Brandon after they have slept together in the previous episode.
"The Fosters" stimulates lots of questions on its viewers. But the main question is outside the storyline and about the schedule of the return of "The Fosters" with the second half of its season. But based on the first two seasons' scheds, it can be assumed that the next episodes will be back somewhere in the middle of January. It's possible that it will on the eleventh or the eighteenth of the month unless the network wants to shock everyone and try something unusual. But as of now, there really isn't a lot of reason for them to do that, given that how they do things right now is working well. But then again, they aren't amateurs when it comes to surprises.
Whichever way ABC decides to go as far as the schedule is concerned, one thing is almost certain, not everything will fall into perfect place in the last episode storywise. As to the story news that can be given right now, Jesus will have a bigger part in the season's second part considering that "The Fosters" recasted the character after the actor's exit.
As to why they made major turns on the storyline, Hollywood Reporter asked the showrunners about it:
Why was the time right to formalize Callie's adoption?
Peter Paige said that it was a big decision but they can't drag the story out. They had to have faith that she has a compelling character still in interesting situations regardless if she has been adopted or not.
Joanna Johnson said that Callie did not have a lot of control and it's about time to make her proactive and having her own strength.
Callie and Brandon had sex, professed their love for one another and then Callie's adoption was finalized. It was such a bittersweet move. What inspired that?
Paige said that the two are star crossed lovers. They were alone in the cabin and the option has presented itself and everything felt true to their characters. "Nothing is ever off the table at The Fosters as long as it's based in reality."
