Destiny's expansion game "The Taken King" will feature not one but two multiplayer modes as announced by game maker Bungie. A report posted by gamespot.com has Lead Designer Lars Bakken's take on the company's decision to come out with the new updates. According to him, the new modes shall be called "Rift" and "Mayhem". He proceeds to explain each one. Rift, he said, is objective style mode and more like a twist on capture-the-flag multiplayer battles. Apparently, Bungie wants to let fans know that they know how to listen to their supporters.
When a match is started on this mode, an object called "Spark" is placed in the middle of the game map. Teams must get the Spark to their opponent's base in order to score. To put a twist on things, there is a time limit set to how long teams can hold on to the "Spark" before it explodes unless it is brought to the other team's base. Rift will also be a 6v6 team battle mode, as described in the same gamespot.com post.
In "Mayhem" mode, weapons, ammo, and abilities are given lightning fast recharge times. In a post in gameranx.com, Bungie calls this mode "party game" where they hope the players can have fun and blow off steam instead of getting too worked up by the game. However, they also revealed that "Mayhem" is not yet a permanent part of the game and they will wait for the fans' reactions before deciding whether to keep it or not. In the same light, they also announced making the Elimination hardcore mode a regular part of the game's offerings. "I think players told us pretty quickly with Trials when we gave them Elimination as a rotating mode, the first posts that were popping up were, 'Oh my God, just make it permanent, you a**holes!' 'Just do it; we want to play it all the time.' So that's what we're going to try," Bakken commented.
