Katharine Hepburn, who was known to have received the most number of Best Actress Awards from the Oscars, once rented a five-bedroom, five and a half bath, Mexican-style hacienda at 2320 Bowmont Drive in Los Angeles' Coldwater Canyon. This property is now on the market for $7.395 million. The 4,984 square foot home was originally owned in the 1930s and 1940s by Boris Karloff, who once played Frankenstein. But there's more to this house than just being occupied by a multi-awarded actress and a horror actor.
Hepburn moved from New York to California in 1932 as she shifted from Broadway to the big screen. She was married then, but news had it that she got into an illicit affair with her agent, Leland Hayward, and that this house served as their "love nest."
Constructed in 1927, the abode rests on a quiet street which offers lots of privacy. It is marked by red-tile floors, thick, whitewashed masonry walls, and exposed-beam ceilings. Fireplaces are found in and out of the house. The master suite comes with a large sitting area, French doors leading to the outdoors, and a bath with an extremely big tub plus a shower with seating. It likewise has a terra cotta roof, white brick walls, an eat-in kitchen with chef-grade appliances, a cozy lounge area with a pizza oven in the courtyard, and a heated pool.
Edward Fitz of The Agency, the home's listing agent, describes the house as situated on an ultra-secluded estate which drinks in light all day long, something unusual for a canyon home. The sun nurtures the garden's roses, believed to be planted by Karloff himself. Some of Karloff friends reportedly wanted to be cremated and buried in this garden, but Fitz denies that such really happened.
With the purchase of this house, according to Fitz, "You and your family can roam where legends once did."
