'Boruto: Naruto the Movie' can be considered as two movies in one film.
The first is the story of Boruto and his declining relationship with his father Naruto. Naruto attains his lifelong dream of becoming the Hokage, and it turns out that he is great at it. He takes his job seriously and can often be seen using his shadow clones to help him run errands. Konoha, Hidden Leaf Village, prosper so much in the time of Naruto as the Hokage. Their technological advances in 15 years are also quite remarkable. They are now in an era of computers and portable gadgets from the industrial revolution we used to see in past Naruto seasons and movies.
Even with so much achievement as the Hokage, Naruto is depicted as a bad father. He is so absorbed in his work for the village that sometimes he just sends a shadow clone to attend to his family affairs, and oftentimes he just sends a message to Hinata.
In the movie, Boruto is teamed up with Sarada Uchiha, daughter of Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura, and Mitsuki (predicted to be a child of Orochimaru).
Mitsuki is described in the books as "an enigma shrouded in many mysteries. A boy with a composed expression... His slightly-long white hair has a waviness to it."
Boruto wants to get stronger to prove that he deserves more attention from his father. He battles a moral dilemma during the span of the story. He met a pair of scientists who developed a miniaturized scroll launcher that allows even low-powered ninjas to use powerful skills. This is his chance to prove himself in the Ninja Qualifying Exam, but unfortunately, his father, the hokage, banned this device and considered it as cheating. He also sought the help of Sasuke to train him and learn his father's weakness.
The second movie that is in the film is more of a fan service. The makers brought to life the powerful and flashy tandem of Sasuke and Naruto against a forgettable villain, leaving the supposedly main character aside. There is no actual resolution on how the relationship of Boruto with his father will go nor a solution to the moral dilemma he faced.
Due to the lack of tied knots, anime fans are expecting that there will be a sequel to the film.
