Private Island off Connecticut for Sale

Among the few islands that are habitable among the Long Island Sound archipelago called the Thimble Islands, the private island of Jepson has come up for sale.

The asking price for this island spread across 12196.8 sq ft or .28 acres is $1,995,000. The property includes a six-room contemporary vacation home spread across 1,018 sq ft comprising two bedrooms and a bathroom. It also has a balcony and a deck and “walls of glass showcase vistas of the island and Long Island Sound,” a press release stated. Beautifully landscaped gardens enhance the appeal of the property.

The waterfront, which has a boat deck, a beach and mooring, can be reached via stone steps.

“This exceptional property is the ultimate getaway. With so few of the Thimble Islands being habitable, it is incredibly rare for an island property like this one to come on the market here in Southern Connecticut,” William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty listing agent Margaret Muir, who shares the listing with Tony Nuzzo, said in a statement.

“Private, secluded and complete with its own charming vacation home, this island is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy waterfront living off the coast of Connecticut. The property is close to the mainland yet feels a world apart,” said Nuzzo.

The Jepson Island is owned by a widow, Christine Svenningsen, who spent more than $30 million to buy ten of the Thimble Islands, according to CBS New York.

On purchasing these islands and restoring properties there, Svenningsen, who is also an artist, was quoted in CBS New York as saying, “they’re like little pieces of art. I get to put my brush to them.”
Besides the Jepson, Svenningsen is also selling the Beldon Island for almost $4 million, the report said. “Belden is slightly over an acre and has a 1912 colonial with about 2,100 square feet and clam beds,” according to the report.

The Thimble Islands are part of the Stony Creek-Thimble Islands Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Though there are close to 365 isles only 25 are considered habitable.
