Taking a breather from the day to day demands of running the country's affairs is a rare, but much-awaited moment for our Presidents. Knowing where he and his loved ones will be taking time off usually catches the citizens' interest. Here are some of the favorite places identified to be the present and past world leaders' get aways.
1. Camp David, Catoctin Mountain Park, Maryland
This is the ultimate presidential retreat commonly associated with President Eisenhower, who named the place after his grandson, but it was President Roosevelt who started hanging out there. It was originally built for disabled children. It has eventually become a secluded place for dignitaries visiting the country.
2. Kennedy Compound, Hyannisport, Massachusetts
It started as a summer cottage rented by President Kennedy's father, Joseph, until he bought it years later to become their family's retreat. Many events in American history happened here but only a few were allowed in.
3. Little White House, Key West, Florida
From President Truman who started playing and working here, other Presidents followed suit. Nowadays, private parties and public tours have taken the place of official functions, but the place has been preserved closely to how President Truman left it.
4. Monticello, Charlottesville, Virginia
Presented at the back of the nickel, the Roman neoclassic house was first built by President Jefferson in 1769, who continued working on it until 1809.
5. Rancho del Cielo, Santa Barbara, California
It was bought by President Reagan during his second term and it became his retreat during his battle against Alzheimer's disease. Today, it is owned by the Young America's Foundation and is open for tours.
6. Bush Compound (Walker's Point), Kennebunkport, Maine
Built in 1903, this house has been with the Bush family for over 100 years now. The family visits it every year, although they spend more time in Texas.
7. Mount Vernon, Mount Vernon, Virginia
It is considered as the first presidential retreat. It is here that President Washington and his wife lived for 40 years, and managed to expand its grounds from 2,000 to 8,000 acres.
8. LBJ ranch, Stonewall, Texas
It used to be President Johnson's ranch, and is currently an active attraction for the National Park Service.
9. Kenwood, Chicago, Illinois
This is the Obama's residence which costs $1.6 million.
10. Pine Knot, Albemarle County, Virginia
This served as a retreat for the Roosevelt family. Recently, it underwent restorations for visitors' access.
