For the second weekend in a row, "Straight Outta Compton" topped the charts with $26.8 million from 3,025 locations summing up its over- all profit of $111.5 million. It's been a great business for Universal and Legendary who spent $29 million producing the film.
According to reuters.com, "Straight Outta Compton" has been bashed for its "glossing over its members treatment of women" and Dr. Dre apologized for it but negative headlines seem to make the film even more famous resulting to its high gross.
Despite of its low budget, "Sinister 2" garnered a total of $10.6 million from 2,766 locations making it land on the third place. Though the film didn't reach its expected profit of $14 million to $16 million, Focus Features, the production behind the film, spent less than $10 million making it, giving them a decent profit from it.
Fox's "Hitman: Agent 47" experienced a hiccup when it only earned $8.2 million from 3,261 locations when its producer spent $35 million to make the film. The producers expected to get $11 million after replacing "Justified's" Timothy Olyphant with "Homeland's" Rupert Friend but the switch didn't help the film that much. The latest "Hitman" also failed to surpass its 2007 predecessor that earned $13.1 million on its opening.
In a report by variety.com, Liongate's "American Ultra" performed the lowest among the newly opened movies. It garnered a total of $5.5 million only from 2,778 locations and landed flat on the sixth place. The film reunited Jesse Eisenberg with his former co- star in "Adventure Land" last 2009, Kristen Stewart.
According to Fox's distribution chief, the three films "cannibalized each other" since all three films carried R- ratings and intended for adult audience. He also added "It's an unfortunate confluence of events. All three of those films combined would have made a decent opening for any one of them."
The over-all ticket sales were believed to be down with roughly seven percent compared to last year's sales when "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" were getting a lot of attention.
