After failing to draw big crowds and cashing in with the US movie audience, "Terminator: Genisys" found its saving grace on Chinese shores. The fifth movie of the franchise raked in $27.4 million in its debut last Sunday in more than 25,000 movie houses across China. It essentially gave the reeling movie series about cyborgs a much needed shot in the arm. The film now has grossed $335.1 million worldwide and about three quarters of the haul came from abroad. It was reported in variety.com that the movie recorded the fourth biggest opening day for any US film released in China.
According to the same post in variety.com, it was not the only film that made it big in abroad and coincidentally another offering from Paramount and Skydance posted the second highest grossing movie listed on the foreign charts. "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" took in $25.2 million from 63 nations adding up its worldwide earnings to $438.6 million. This is expected to balloon even bigger when the film debuts in China on September 8.
In a post in forbes.com, more details about the resurgent movie came to light. It was revealed that the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie recorded a stunning $2.2 million in midnight previews in China. This was good enough to put the film right in the heels of "Transformers: Age of Extinction", "Avengers: Age of Ultron", and currently the reigning Chinese box office king "Furious 7". Talks of another sequel were put on hold prior to the screening of "Terminator: Genisys" in China as producers Paramount and Viacom Inc. wanted to get a feel for what its biggest audience in Asia had to say. It has now been reported that another one is coming in May 2017. The same report also mentioned that if "Terminator: Genisys" breaks $400 million it will be the first film to reach this mark while failing to gross $100 million in the US.
