Google recently released the last version of the Androin M Developer Preview. They have also confirmed that this version is the 6.0 Marshmallow version and they will be opening Play for apps that will be able to handle the API level 23 that is in Marshmallow. Google has not given out a lot of details about it, and no specifics has been released just yet. However, what is known at this point is that Marshmallow might be out for the public by September's end or October's first week. It will be released alongside the entry of Google Nexus 5 coming from Huawei and LG.
But unless you're a developer, you wouldn't have access to Marshmallow, at least not until its release next month.
But for developers, they are already given access to the beta update before it hits the public. So practically, it's still almost ready for the public to use. It was reported that the Android platform will be affected by the changes as Google updates the final permissions user interface. It was said that the it will perform better with the recent update. As for the API, changes concerning fingerprints will take place, thus making the capture of fingerprints better and even more reliable. Google developers reveal that Google Play will also release updates so as to make the app installations and update processes support the new permissions model.
So to cut to the chase about Marshmallow: First, it is the successor of Lollipop. It's estimated release is Q3 of 2015. And as to its pricing, it's probably free as always. The name Android Marshmallow has become official, debunking all other speculations like Muffin, Milkshake, and something you might not believe - Malt Ball. Internally, Marshmallow was previously preferred to as Macadamia Nut Cookie and teased as 'Android M'.
