The body of a 17-month-old boy from Long Island was discovered in his backyard by state police, on Saturday.
The remains of Justin Kowalczik were buried more than two years ago, the Daily News reported.
According to the Daily News, the dead boy's mother, Heather Kowalczik, has been keeping this dark secret while raising her other two kids.
Police suspect her boyfriend, Robert Rodriguez, as the person who committed this crime, but no arrests have been made.
Neighbors, who learned of this news, are shocked.
Takiera McCormick told the Daily News she recently attended a celebration at the house.
"We were all out there having a good time," McCormick said.
"The kids were playing on the trampoline. I'm just shocked. There is no explanation."
The Daily News reported that Kowalczik's body was buried in the backyard in 2010 and Rodriguez refused to corporate with cops when he was questioned.
Heather and Rodriguez have two older sons together. Rodriguez was not the biological father of the dead boy, the Daily News confirmed.
"I'm disgusted," Louis Lancia, landlord, told the Daily News.
"I don't want them coming back. I want to change the locks."
An Amber Alert has been issued out for Rodriguez, who picked up his 9-year-old son from school and has not been seen ever since.
