Real Estate Horror Stories

One Story was told by Matt Bolin of Chadwick Real Estate at Turramurra. He said that a solo-living middle-aged woman was reported to have placed a mannequin near a window to scare would-be intruders. This mannequin "Gary" appeared tall and lean with Sydney Swans cap pulled low over his brow and a few missing fingers and would cut as a striking figure in the hallway of the home on Sydney's upper north shore.

"We found out after the first open home that Gary was scaring buyers," says Matt Bolin of Chadwick Real Estate at Turramurra. Bolin and his assistant transferred Gary to a walk-in cupboard before the next open house, accidentally knocking off one of the mannequin's arms and a few clothes in the process.

"Twenty minutes later, we heard this bloodcurdling scream," Bolin continues. "We raced over and saw a young Chinese buyer down on her knees at the cupboard. I don't know if she thought she'd seen a corpse or a ghost. She certainly wasn't expecting to see Gary."

Another agent, who the source says has refused to be named, has also share about the time she received a phone call moments before an open home in Brisbane's Bayside area was due to finish. A man had asked her to wait a few more minutes for him to arrive.

"When he got there, I went downstairs ... This guy walked up the stairs and locked me out," the agent says.

Then she said that while she was on the phone to the police, she heard a drilling sound coming from inside the house. "The police asked if he had any weapons. I said, 'I don't know. Probably. I didn't see the drill'."

She approached the neighbours , thinking they were bikers, to watch in case things went from bad to worse. The went out with baseball bats but she stopped them and asked them to be witnesses just in case. The police arrived just as the seller was driving into the street.

"They ended up bashing in the back door while other officers were talking to him at the front door. They took him to a psych ward ... and told me I was pretty lucky. He also had a tomahawk and a machete."
