"Awkard" will air its final season starting Aug. 31, but it was just revealed by the MTV show's new showrunners that there could be an upcoming reboot.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, co-showrunners Mike Chessler and Chris Alberghini said that there's more to "Awkward" than the characters' high school life. Although this is the central theme throughout the past seasons, the characters' life outside of high school may take center stage in the reboot.
"I think we dropped a big enough hint that this may not be the final season, so we just want to make sure that gets heard," Alberghini said.
Meanwhile, the co-showrunners also talked about Jenna and Maty's relationship and explained why they said that it will be at the core of Season 5.
"That is a core axis of the show: the unlikely way they got together after the pilot and then found their way to dating, and then there's always something getting in the way. As you can see at the end of 4B, there were a lot of other curveballs," Chessler said.
In other news, Chessler said that there will be no new major characters in Season 5A.
"It didn't make a lot of sense because we're in the homestretch of senior year, and I think we've kind of met all the big players. But there are a couple of really fun new characters popping up," he said.
Alberghini revealed that Season 5A will pick up just a day or two where Season 4B ended.
"They get back from spring break, so all of the issues that we left 4B with, we'll be dealing with the repercussions of those story points at the beginning of 5A."
"Awkward" Season 5 stars Ashley Rickards, Beau Mirchoff, Jillian Rose Reed, Molly Tarlov, Brett Davern, Nikki Deloach, Desi Lydic and more. The series will premiere on MTV on Aug. 31 with "Woman Crush."
