50 Bodies of Migrants Found in a Truck in Austria

The on- going war and chaos in Middle East and Africa have pushed refugees to seek safety as migrants to other countries. Unfortunately, many of them are entering a certain country illegally as part of human trafficking or smuggling.

According to nytimes.com, a truck was found last Thursday containing up to 50 decomposing bodies. The truck was abandoned on the outskirts of Vienna in Austria. The discovery was just in time with the meeting of European leaders to come up with solutions on how to resolve the migration crisis.

Germany's chancellor, Angela Merkel said "We are all shaken by this terrible news that up to 50 people have lost their lives because they got into a situation where smugglers did not care about their lives. Such a tragic death." Ms. Merkel said that Europe "need to pull together and ease the migration crisis" which is part of the biggest wave of migrants since World War II.

The people found inside the truck were believed to be on their way to central Europe, particularly Germany, to live in a wealthier country. Hans Peter Doskozil, director of the police in the eastern state of Burgenland, said that their investigation is being slowed down or sometimes hindered due to the bodies' decomposition. The truck was discovered around 11:40 AM. Mr. Doskozil said "It is clear that this is a case of organized criminality where a lot of money is at stake and business is made out of human suffering."

According to aljazeera.com, the truck was standing on the highway since Wednesday and it was not clear how they died because the bodies have started to decompose. It was also reported that the migrants were possibly dead even before they crossed the border.

Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann said that "The refugees who died today wanted to save their own lives by fleeing, but instead lost their lives at the hands of traffickers. It shows once again how necessary it is to save human lives by fighting criminal traffickers. It shows that we must take responsibility and give asylum to those people who are fleeing."
