Smart Home Technology Update: Samsung SmartFridge Got Hacked, Three Other Smart Home Hub Devices Have High Risk of Being Hacked

Smart Home Technology is the latest trend in easy living. All you need is an internet connection and you can control most of your appliances in just a few swipes and taps on your smartphones or tablets. Smart Home also has security features that can protect your home from burglars and other threats. But, let us not forget that your smart home is connected to a network, and there are great minds out there that as long as there is a network and internet, they can do everything they want.

Pen Test Partners has posted recently about the flaws and bugs that they have found in Samsung SmartFridge. They tweeted a challenge titled "Can you own our #IoT #Samsung - RF28HMELBSR fridge"

In the article in their website, the group of white hat hackers said that the SmartFridge of Samsung were unable to intercept their fake security credentials that enables the hackers to interrupt the communication between the fridge and Google Calendars. These flaw can be exploited by cyber criminals to steal your Google log-in names and password.

Last August 5, Tripwire, a leading global provider of IT security and compliance automation solutions, have unveiled security flaws against three top selling Smart Home Hub in Amazon: SmartThings Hub; Wink Hub; and Mios from Vera.

Smart Home Hubs are used to gain remote control to your smart appliances from your smartphone and tablets. It can also send notification when some changes happens.

The study from the Vulnerability and Exposure Research Team of TripWire uncovered zero-day flaws inside the smart hubs, which, if exploited, could allow hackers to gain control of alarm settings, temperature levels and door locks, as well as being able to tell when people have left their home.

It is better to think twice before you get your own smart home appliances.
