Facebook would soon not only be known as a social networking site, but as an e-commerce site as well. The company as reported by buzz feed is experimenting on mini shops within Facebook pages. Though still on a testing phase, usual e-commerce features such as buy buttons are already in place.
Facebook product marketing manager Emma Rodgers said, via BuzzFeed News, "With the shop section on the page, we're now providing businesses with the ability to showcase their products directly on the page."
If such experiment would be successful, then Facebook pages would have a significant effect on online commerce. It would be easier for retailers to not only inform customers about their products, but to sell directly to them.
The online shop on Facebook pages is one of the biggest push to be made by the tech giant into e-commerce. The company would like to take part of the huge revenue coming from online commerce, which according to eMarketer reached around $350 billion this year. Facebook's revenue coming from digital advertising on the other hand only scored around $60 billion as of 2015. And for such opportunity, Facebook is gearing up for a change.
Such revenue reflects the fact that Facebook does not currently take a percentage from product sales on its platform as reported by buzzzfeed. With the temptation to monetize ecommerce this experiment of Facebook might be able to propel them into the top of online commerce industry such as Amazon.
For those who can't wait for such change to be universally applied, Facebook is still taking a secure step before such thing would happen. But one thing for sure is that update would continually be made in order to serve every user's need. "We'll continue to add incremental features and capabilities to Pages because they are such an important part of the consumer experience on Facebook."
