Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 players hoping to enjoy NetherRealm Studios' "Mortal Kombat X" on their last generation consoles will be disappointed with this latest news. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has announced that the game won't be released for said consoles after all.
The "Mortal Kombat X" cancellation was posted through the game's community blog post released last Friday, August 28, reports the site VG24/7. The announcement stated that the company came to a "regrettable conclusion" after several months of development work on the game.
The statement read: "After months of development, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has come to the regrettable conclusion that we cannot release Mortal Kombat X for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Please know our teams worked diligently to meet the quality standards set by the current-gen versions of the game. We were not able to get the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions to the quality expected of a Mortal Kombat game and are very sorry for not being able to deliver the products as originally planned."
The "Mortal Kombat X" version for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 was initially expected to be released in April along with the game's PC, Xbox One and Playstation 4 versions. Unfortuately, the release for last generation consoles was moved to June, states Kotaku. However, in May, the retailer GameStop reportedly changed the placeholder release date from June 2 to sometime until December 31. At that time, the game's developers did not indicate the reason for the delayed release.
According to Tech Times, while the core of "Mortal Kombat X" may have been created by NetherRealm Studios, developer High Voltage Software was assigned the task of bringing the iconic fighting game to the PC and the last generation consoles. The PC version of the game reportedly had its share of problems, however the latest cancellation news can be attributed to the power limitations of the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
The community blog post also advised gamers who already pre-ordered "Mortal Kombat X" for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, to proceed to the retail location where the game was pre-purchased. Eligible players will then be given a "full refund."
