No one can stop Miley Cyrus with her revealing outfits in last night's MTV Video Music Awards, but she could not stop the show ratings from declining. According to Entertainment Weekly, last Sunday night's ratings were down 5 percent compared to the ratings from the 2014 Video Music Awards.
The telecast garnered over 9.8 million viewers across the 10 Viacom-owned networks. Last year, it was reported that the show garnered 13.7 million views. Miley Cyrus still stole the show then even without appearing on stage when she won Video of the Year for "Wrecking Ball." She also came with a homeless guy named Jesse. She also made headlines when she performed with Robin Thicke during the 2013 VMA's where the show garnered over 10.1 million viewers.
In this year's VMAs though, despite Cyrus' show-stopping acts and also her feud with Nicki Minaj when the rapper called out Cyrus during her acceptance speech for winning best hip-hop video award for her hit song "Anaconda," some people believed that Cyrus' hosting stint was one of the reasons why the show had low ratings.
However, the show became the most tweeted non-sports program with over 21.4 million tweets, which reached over 12 million people. According to Deadline, the show also had over 39 million Facebook interactions.
One of the most talked about moment in the show happened when Kanye West announced that he was going to run for president in 2020. It was reported that the rapper made this announcement during his acceptance speech for the Video Vanguard Award. This was also the most tweeted moment of the show, with over 247,525 tweets following the said announcement, according to Variety.
