Australian actress Rebel Wilson is now the subject of a Twitter backlash after she joked about police brutality during Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards.
Black activists and Twitter users called out Wilson after the comedienne's skit wasn't well received by fans, reports Australia's news.com. The "Pitch Perfect" star came out on the VMA stage last Sunday dressed as a cop, where she said, "A lot of people have problems with the police. But I really hate police strippers." The 35 year old star then took off her cop uniform to reveal a bodysuit which had "F--- Tha Stripper Police" printed at the front. The actress continued, "You guys know what I'm talking about. They come to your house, you think you're getting arrested, and you just get a lap dance that is usually uninspired."
Wilson then joked how a police stripper she hired for her grandmother's 80th birthday "wouldn't even feel her up." She also said that she paid extra for her grandmother to get an erotic back massage but it only lasted one song. The actress finished off the skit with, "I hate this injustice. Hence the shirt."
Unfortunately, not everyone was amused with the star, particularly activist DeRay Mckesson, who took to Twitter, reports the news site. McKesson wrote, "@RebelWilson/@MTV, police violence isn't a joke, as the deaths of #TamirRice, #RekiaBoyd, #FreddieGray, #MikeBrown, & #MyaHall remind us." Other Twitter users soon followed with comments such as "I seriously fail to see any comedy in police violence, what-so-ever @RebelWilson." One Twitter user even wrote, "I love Rebel Wilson but the whole poking fun at the disgusting reality of police brutality thing wasn't cute or funny it was inappropriate."
A few Twitter fans even were even angry that the Australian actress made her joke before the winner for the Best Hip Hop Video was announced, reports Huffington Post. One example is a Twitter message with read, "Rebel Wilson's got her nerve presenting Best Hip-Hop Video while making a joke out of police/state violence."
Meanwhile, Wilson or her representatives have yet to comment on the issue.
