Employer Relocation Packages: How Much Help Can You Really Get?

Many people in the United States relocate because of their jobs, nearly seven million a year acoording to Zillow. It is strongly advised that before you pack your stuff and head off to another location, you should know what your employer will or will not include in the relocation package as that can greatly affect your budget and your transfer. The more information you gather, the smoother your transfer will become. So here are a few pointers to consider when relocating due to career.

One important thing to remember is that it is not safe to assume that your employer has the same relocation package that someone you know may have received from his own company. If no relocation package is discussed, you need to assertively ask about it then do your research to find out all associated costs to check if the package is sufficient. On the other hand, if there is indeed a relocation package, you should find out as soon as possible if it is sufficient enough to cover costs such as transfer of vehicles and housing costs.

Secondly, you need to check if the company offers extras such as employment assistance for your accompanying spouse or partner.  Your spouse after all may have to leave her own job and it could be difficult to find another one in an entirely different environment. Note that some companies cover only the basic costs so be prepared to handle incidental costs on your own.

Third, you also need to find out how much assistance your company would provide in terms of moving your household items. Some companies may give you a lump sum amount so it may be up to you to find the most cost-efficient solution to moving your stuff. Loading them all in your car may be inexpensive but you have to consider that it can do damage to some fragile equipment, not to mention how so much time and fuel can be consumed going back and forth because your car can only accommodate a few items at a time. Aside from getting professional assistance from movers, you can also get a self-service moving truck which combines do-it-yourself loading and professional moving.

Lastly, because your relocation involves financial matters, you cannot afford to miss checking tax implications which can be complicated. So remember to check with your legal or tax adviser.
