Home Design: A Break-the-Rules Guide To Living Room Design

Having a stylish place doesn't mean that you need to copy those cookie-cutter rooms that all follow the same formula. Sometimes, the best rooms are those that dare to break the rules.

Here is a break-the-rules guide to living room design according to Apartment Therapy:

"Rule": You need a coffee table

Nope. It's okay to ditch the coffee table and rather have some open space for your impromptu dance parties. That way, there's no need to move furniture or try to beautify your normally boring (that's how it will be if you have one, you know it) coffee table.

"Rule": A rug is a must

To say it's a must is just too restrictive. If some days you want some softness, then suit yourself and get the plushiest rug and spread it across your floor. But for days that you wish to boast your gorgeous hardwood, it's totally fine to hide those rugs until the next time your feet long for the softness again.

"Rule": Never go oversized on a small space

Unlike the by-rule design notion that an oversized artwork would overwhelm a tiny room - it's actually what could make it. Sometimes, using small pieces in a small room could just look scattered and unfocused. One big piece could actually ground the décor and pull the look together.

"Rule": Cleaning and polishing will improve anything

Rustic theme is big in interior design these days. So let some weathered texture lend a rustic vibe to your space. While a redo can make old things look better, but imperfect can be beautiful too.

"Rule": Your metals have to match

No more! In fact, mixing metals is a great low-key way to get an unfussy, cool, I-just-threw-all-these-things-together-and-it-works feel without making your eclectic look too over the top. Use brass, copper, steel, and try to pick pieces in those elements and create the perfect metallic touch in your space without blinding your eyes from all the shine.
