Esports and Its Growing Influence in the "Sports" Industry

Esport has definitely made its presence known over the past years. From its million-dollar prize pools and massive numbers of players all over the globe, esports has definitely caught the attention of the populace. Its ever growing platforms and audiences would perhaps be one of the reasons why Dictionary.com decided to add it on their list of words.

Esports was defined in the dictionary as "competitive tournaments of video games" and to be used as a noun in a sentence. This word together with other 1,000 new words was added into the dictionary last May of this year. Words such as permadeath, which means the permanent death of a defeated character, after which the player of the game cannot continue with the same character, and completionist, which means a player who attempts to complete every challenge and earn every achievement or trophy in a video game. These set of words would soon be commonly mentioned or seen in some media platforms as sports channels and other media are showing greater interest into the said competition.

Entertainment and Sports Programming Network or ESPN just recently emphasized the value of esports coverage though it is still not widely embraced by most sports enthusiasts as a new genre. A testament to this was their coverage of the recent Heroes of the Storm tournament finals. And on top of that, great deal of importance is being shown by the company as they are hiring as of now a General Editor "to oversee all esports coverage on ESPN.com and beyond."

The act of this Disney-owned cable network and online sporting news outlet proves their great interest on the ever-growing professional video game competitions. Their search for a key-personnel to manage and fill-in the gap presumes more growth and updates to come with regards to esports. Fans of video game competitions would expect a larger coverage on tournaments such as the recently concluded Dota 2 International tournament where Evil Geniuses of USA took home the $6.6 million prize money.

The video game competition is still too young to be inducted in level with basketball and other known sports. But as time passes by and as technologies are getting cheaper and less bulky, chances are great that esports would not only be in the interest of few people today's generation.
