Forget About Apple, Sony Sets Ambitious Price For Xperia Z5 Premium

Sony has revealed the Xperia Z5 family of smartphones at the IFA trade show in Berlin. The Japanese company last week unveiled its next-generation camera with Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact, and the world's first ever 4K smartphone Xperia Z5 Premium.

Forbes said the company could expect a very promising end of the year, particularly with the news of the pricing for its handsets, better than the first half of 2015. Sony has created an impressive buzz around its new Xperia Z5 handsets out of the IFA, according to Forbes.

Prices for the Xperia Z5 series are making headlines--betanews said "they're a bit insane" but "looks like a great opportunity to attract more new customers and gain some market share." Based on Sony's website, 32GB Z5 Compact is priced at £429 ($650), Z5 at £549 ($832), and the Z5 Premium at £629 ($954). To compare, iPhone 6 16GB unit is priced at £539 ($817) or £619 ($938) for 64GB and the iPhone 6S at £619 ($938) for 16GB or £699 ($1,059) for 64GB. Of these, betanews said that the only reasonably priced is the Xperia Z5 Compact compared to the other devices.

Matching the Apple's prices or charging more than the nearest equivalent iPhone could be an insane take for Sony, but Ewan Spence of Forbes thinks "it's a genius move."

"Sony has a strong brand name, and in the Xperia smartphones it has a strong product line that is mature enough to stand up and fight in the high-end space," Spence wrote. And because consumers tend to zero in on higher priced handsets when looking for the "best" smartphones, Xperia Z5 family will automatically be considered by many.

Sony's sales has not been doing well according to reports, but with the offering of the Xperia Z5 at an "ambitious" price that undercuts its main rivals, Sony could be well under way to rise.
