'Grey's Anatomy' News: Shonda Rhimes and Ellen Pompeo On Why Fans Must Move on From the Death of Dr. McDreamy

As many fans are petitioning to revive Patrick Dempsey's character in "Grey's Anatomy," this may fall on false hope as Shonda Rhimes together with Ellen Pompeo, Viola Davis, and Kerry Washington had a roundtable discussion for this according to Entertainment Weekly.

The death of Patrick Dempsey's character Dr. McDreamy in "Grey's Anatomy" may have had an impact to the audience but it also shows a very definitive meaning to any woman. As said by Shonda Rhimes from the article of EW, Dr. McDreamy's existence would have had "complimented" Meredith Grey's life but that doesn't mean he "completes" her.

Rhimes said in the article, "In an effort not to become her mother, she had tried too hard to become something less. What I loved about season 11 was her saying, That's not who I am. It was so interesting for me to discover that audiences, especially women, are so conditioned to believe that there's a singular fairy tale that nobody stops to think that that might not be the definition of happiness. Meredith knew that already. We got to the point in the season when Meredith said, "I can live without you, but I don't want to," which for any woman is a very powerful statement. It means: You compliment me, but you don't complete me."

On the other hand, Pompeo wants viewers to see that Meredith can move on without McDreamy and for them to also see the light of the story to be of Meredith's just like how Annalise Keating's story runs "How to Get Away with Murder" and Olivia Pope in "Scandal". Pompeo said to EW, "It's like, Annalise Keating carries the show, Olivia Pope carries the show." She also added, "But somehow, Meredith Grey needs someone. Why can't I just be the lead of the show the way Annalise and Olivia can? Why can't I be on that poster by myself?"

Watch "Grey's Anatomy" season 12 premiere episode on Sept. 24 on ABC.
