Adweek has the chance to feature in its design issue the home of the famous furnishings guru Jonathan Adler and his husband designer and author Simon Doonan in New York.
Their house features many of Adler's creations. The popular decorator uses his own designs and creations to add more colorful compliments in their home. Most of the glitzier pieces in his home are made of ceramics. Adler refers his kind of decorating and accessorizing as "happy chic" and he hopes that more Americans will try it in their homes. He also describes his aesthetics as "modern American glamour" and his home is the epitome of it.
The creative power couple also shared with the magazine their sentiments regarding some people's bad design choices. Jonathan wished for people to put more effort in decorating their homes. According to Luxury Listing NYC, in Adler's interview with Adweek, the furnishing guru said, "The sad thing is that most people don't feel like they have the leeway to play. Decorating seems intimidating to people and they feel like, 'Oh, if I'm going to live with something forever, I should choose something middle-of-the-road.' You should never settle for any object that is less than extraordinary because that's what will make your life and your home memorable."
After his failed attempt in making it in the film industry, Adler went back to pottery business. It was in 1993 that the upscale retailer Barney purchased his first collection. And after five years, Adler opened his own flagship store. Adler is the CEO of his global company named after him which has 28 freestanding stores and wide range of accessories in a lot of chain retail locations.
In a New York Post Page Six report, Adler explained, "I make many thousands of products, and not only do I enjoy bringing them into my house, I just feel it's my responsibility to road test them."
