Greece Leader on Refugee Crisis: Secure The Borders

Since the dawn of war and violence in Syria, Iraq and other Middle East or Asian countries, more than 230,000 people have entered the shores of Greece this year, according to Yahoo! News.

Greek authorities have been stunned by the outrageous arrival of refugees resulting in too many refugees sleeping outdoors because reception facilities are scarce. These refugees have minimal access to sanitation and medical care.

The acting migration minister informed on Monday that the island of Lesbos was "on the verge of explosion" with over 15,000 refugees consisting mainly of Syrians lining up to be registered for travel to Athens. In one incident, the police struggled to control the crowd of 2,500 waiting to get into a government-chartered ship that would take them to the capital. They were not equipped enough to control the crowd who are desperate to board the ship. With this, the head of the conservative party believes that the nation should strengthen its border defenses to control wave of migrants landing on Greek shores.

"As regards migrants, the borders must be better protected and Greece should not send the message that 'it's good over here, come over,'" Evangelos Meimarakis, New Democracy leader said on Star channel. "Because whoever comes here, sends this message to those waiting."

Now, according to BBC News, the Greek government and the UN refugee agency have brought in extra staff and ships to deal with some 25,000 now stranded in the island of Lesbos. In addition, a processing center has been set up in an abandoned football ground to help the migrants get to Athens.

Meanwhile, in another report on BBC News, it has been said that more than 350,000 migrants, an estimate from International Organization for Migration (IOM), were detected in the borders of the EU within the span of January to August this year. The figure does not include undetected migrants.
