Apple may soon not only be known for its iPhones and other similar gadgets. For according to reports, Apple would be boosting its presence in the gaming industry through their new and updated Apple TV. According to sources Apple will launch during the upcoming Apple Event on Wednesday their redesigned Apple TV set-top box which is expected to make games as its primary selling point. And such shift would be a major change in contrast to Apple TV's previous versions which focuses mainly on music and video streaming.
The new hockey puck like device is said to be packed with processing power boost supported by A8 chip currently inside the iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2. The only difference with iPhones and iPads, the A8 chip chassis may be utilized to its fullest by game developers for it is not battery powered. To complement the framework of the new Apple TV is the rumored Apple TV specific app store, where powerful new games are expected to be available thus giving more option for gaming enthusiast to enjoy. With these upgrades on both software and hardware, Apple TV would surely give a new meaning to gaming. As to the statement of Jan Dawson, chief analyst at the technology research firm Jackdaw Research, via nytimes, he said that;
"I think Apple's going to create a big new category in gaming, one that others have tried and failed to create before. What the Apple TV has the potential to do is to bring casual gaming to the living room and make it a much more social activity."
However, such move of Apple focusing on the gaming industry does not at all guarantee a shift of interest by most hardcore gaming fanatics. For high end game consoles are still on top of the gaming market. Consoles like Xbox One from Microsoft and the PlayStation 4 from Sony are still ahead of the pack when it comes to gaming consoles. But this does not stop Apple and its Apple TV from catching on and especially that there are still casual gamers to whom they may market their product. It is also good to consider the mark of Apple in the gaming industry in terms of revenue from the games and other related software via app store. With this in mind, the new Apple TV should likewise be reckoned as a soon to be great rival for other consoles.
