Apart from streaming and programming, Apple TV is reportedly going to showcase its ability as casual gaming platform in the upcoming Apple event.
Apple jumpstarted the multibillion-dollar mobile gaming industry when it launched the iPhone in 2007 and according to The New York Times, a new Apple device that can allow gaming in the Apple TV has the potential to ruffle some feathers in the game consoles business. And this possibility is seen by many people in the gaming world as a logical move for the tech titan.
In the same report, people privy to Apple's plans said that the iPhone maker is expected to put great emphasis on Apple TV being an excellent gaming platform as a selling point. It is a significant departure from its original intended use for streaming videos and music. According to the same source, the actual extent of Apple TV's gaming scheme is hard to pin down prematurely but they concede that the hardware to make this happen will surely come. This includes better graphics and a new remote that can be used as game controller. But the biggest announcement will feature an app store where Apple TV users can download games from.
Jackdaw Research chief analyst Jan Dawson shared his opinion on this development. "I think Apple's going to create a big new category in gaming, one that others have tried and failed to create before," he said.
According to Mashable, there is also a reported change in how Apple will price the new Apple TV. From $69 which is the price for the base model, it will now cost $150. These reports all point to the past rumors about the Apple TV being true; from the pricing, to new hardware specs, and even to a new app store for Apple TV games.
