Bangkok Gears Up to Get its Tallest Skyscraper

The "Sin City of Asia," Bangkok, is warming up to welcome its tallest skyscraper, MahaNakhon, that has been designed by German architect, Ole Scheeren.

The building will be a 77 story, mixed use high-rise that is expected to be completed by 2014. Renderings of the building look a lot like the ones of the Jenga Tower that is under construction at 56 Leonard Street in New York. The tower's construction, planned by Herzog and DeMuroned, was stalled for three years and was resumed in 2012. The building shall be completed by the spring of 2016, reports Curbed.

The MahaNakhon building is spread across more than 150,000 square meters and will rise at 314 meters featuring 200 Ritz-Carlton serviced residences, a 150- room Marriott Hotel designed by star designer, Ian Schrager, 10,000 square footage of retail space along with a public plaza, a restaurant and a rooftop Sky lounge and bar plus a 24-hour marketplace, reports Buro-os.com.

As seen in the pictures in Dezeen, the tower's design is a unique pixel-cube that wraps around the tower like a ribbon. The surface of the tower breaks up into cubes to make up the balconies and patios of the upscale residences that overlook the city. Along with the 77-storey tower, a seven-story building called "the cube" will stand adjacent to the main tower. A public plaza will connect the "cube" and the "hill" (the main tower) .

"Every nation needs a symbol of confidence in its future. We believe MahaNakhon will perfectly embody the essence of a strong and forward looking country that is the gateway to Southeast Asia while serving as a bold architectural landmark," Dalit Braun, former CEO of IBC Industrial Buildings, Bangkok told Dezeen.

Currently, The Baiyoke Tower II is the tallest building in Bangkok. However, after the completion of MahaNakhon, the building will be the tallest in the Thai City.
