The Sony PlayStation originally started as a Super Nintendo add-on, and in just two decades, it has pioneered some of the greatest changes in modern gaming. Moving away from Nintendo, Sony released its first console in 1993. The initial console was only available in Japan. By 1995, it branched out to Europe and North America. It was also in 1995 when it dropped the cartridge, upgrading to the then state-of-the-art CD technology. In 2000, it has already sold more than 100 million units worldwide, the first game console able to do so. By 2005, when the PS3 and the PSP were released, at least one out of every five homes in Europe owned a PlayStation. In 2013, the PS4 was launched, introducing a "stream live play" where players can record, edit and upload their videos.
