More than 230 people died in the southern Bralizian city of Santa Maria on Sunday caused by fire in the nightclub. The roof of the nightclub caught fire as a result of faulty pyrotechnics on stage during a live band performance, media outlet G1 reported.
Police Maj. Cleberson Braida Bastianello told the Associated Press that officials found 232 bodies that had been brought for identification to a gymnasium in the city.
The group Gurizada Fandangueira, which plays a driving mixture of local Brazilian country music styles, was playing. It was not clear right away if the band members were among the victims.
Firefighters said majority of the deaths at the Kiss night club were caused by smoke inhalation.
The Kiss nightclub is popular with young people in Santa Maria, gathering more than 2,000 people a night on the weekends.
Officials of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil's southernmost said the tragedy the worst of its kind in the state's history. "We are taking all possible measures to aid the victims," state governor Tarso Genro said.
