Toronto International Film Festival 2015 kicked off Thursday, Sept. 10, in Canada. There are 400 films being shown and it's just a lot. Well, to help you get started, here are the seven must-see movies in this year's film festival.
1. Demolition
IMDB Rating: 8.1/10. This year's TIFF opening film is the dramedy "Demolition" starring Jake Gyllenhaal, who plays the role of a successful investment banker. He made random acts of destruction as he struggles and tries to recover after the tragic death of his wife. He made an unlikely friendship with a woman, played by Noami Watts, and her son. The film is directed by the returning Jean-Marc Vallee and is already surrounded by Oscar buzz, according to E!.
2. The Martian
IMDB Rating: 9.1/10. Could "The Martian" earn the distinction to be "the movie to beat this fall?" Moviefone says it's possible if the movie, directed by Ridley Scott, starring Matt Damon is able to avoid the narrative pitfalls as the buzz indicates. Damon plays an astronaut stranded in Mars, presumed dead after a fierce storm. He finds a way to send signal to Earth that he is alive.
3. High-Rise
"High-Rise" is an "ambitious adaptation" of a 1975 novel written by J.G. Ballard which tells the story of a London tower apartment residents and the class war among them. The film is helmed by cult British director Ben Wheatley, starring Tom Hiddleston and Jeremy Irons. Wheatley is said to have unleashed his "wicked satiric powers" and stylized the past to create a "stunning parable" of our future. "High-Rise" premieres on Sept. 13.
4. Trumbo
Emmy winner Bryan Cranston portrays the character of Dalton Trumbo, a screenwriter who was blacklisted in 1940s, along with other Hollywood personalities, for their political beliefs. While its IMBD rating is just 3.2/10, Moviefone says "Trumbo" is expected to make some noise as the awards season nears. "Trumbo" premieres on Sept. 12.
5. I Saw The Light
IMDB Rating: 8.2/10. "I Saw The Light" tells the story of Hank Williams, played by Tom Hiddleston, as he becomes one of the biggest stars in the music industry before his untimely death at 29. This music biopic is directed by Marc Abraham. It also stars Elizabeth Olsen, Hiddleston's rumored real-life girlfriend, according to E!.
6. Our Brand is Crisis
IMDB Rating: 8.5/10. This "stubbornly hopeful and so entertaining" film tells the fact-based story of American political campaign strategists in South America hired to bolster popularity of a Bolivian presidential candidate. Lead roles are played by Academy Awards winners Sandra Bullock and Billy Bob Thornton. "Our Brand Is Crisis" is a documentary-based film directed by David Gordon Green.
7. Where to Invade Next
IMDB Rating: 7.2/10. "Where to Invade Next" marks the long-awaited return of Michael Moore, who wrote and directed this another controversial, politically-fueled film. His return was only officially announced when the TIFF 2015 schedule was released, according to The Guardian. Moore utilizes his understanding of the arts of provocation and comes up with his most provocative and hilarious film yet, which tells the story of how the U.S. can do a better job in invading other countries.
