Flavia Pennetta wins her first major title in the US Open against her childhood friend Roberta Vinci, who gave everyone a shock by beating Serena Williams the day before. Flavia shared that she's "tiny bit disappointed" that Williams wasn't able to complete the first Grand Slam record since 1988 though it would mean no championship for her.
In a report by nytimes.com, Pennetta said "I was thinking it was going to be nice to be on court with her [Vinci], and maybe lose, but for a moment so special for everyone, for her, for history." Flavia was also asked about her potential match- up with Serena if the latter won on the semi- finals instead of Vinci, and she said, "It's going to be amazing for her to do something like that, and it's going to be amazing for me to win this tournament."
Vinci's victory against Williams had put extra pressure on Pennetta given Serena's achievements. Flavia said, "It was: Now I have more of a chance but on the other side, I tried not to put in my mind that I HAD to win. I had an upset stomach. I even cried. There was an accumulation of emotion."
According to news.yahoo.com, Pennetta has one more surprise for the tennis world: she's retiring. She had already announced last month that she'll be stepping out of the tennis game after the season. She also shared that it's fine with her to retire even without a major title ad she admitted that she told her trainer she will not win a Grand Slam championship in the US Open.
Flavia's fiancé, Fabio Fognini said that she should stay on tour but let her decide anyway. "She's hard-headed, very determined in anything she does," he added.
Italian players had never won a Fed Cup championship before 2006. Italy has won four out of the last nine tours with the players Schiavone, Pennetta, Vinci and Sara Errani.
