'The Incredibles 2' Update: Director Brad Bird Talks Movie Script, Film Will Be Released Before "Cars 3"

Fans of the 2004 Disney Pixar animation film, "The Incredibles," will be happy with the latest news. Director Brad Bird has recently shared a progress update for the script of "The Incredibles 2," along with its potential release schedule.

Collider was able to catch up with the writer and film director during an interview to discuss the upcoming release of "The Iron Giant: Signature Edition." In the interview, Bird shared that he already has the story arc for "The Incredibles 2." He even said that he has completed nearly three-quarters of the movie's script and that he and his team are having a "good time" writing the sequel.

Bird said, "I'm probably three-quarters through the script, first pass through the script, but we're already boarding parts of it. I've got a lot of people that worked on the first one working on it, so we're all having a good time with it."

Unfortunately, the showrunner did not share other details about the Disney Pixar movie, however he did note that superhero movies have gained a lot of momentum over the past few years. Bird told Collider that in 2004, "The Incredibles" was one of the three superhero franchises that were out at that time. The other two were "X-Men" and "Spider-Man," said the director.

Things have obviously changed since then. "Now there are 400 billion of them and there's a new superhero movie every two weeks," Bird added. "What you don't want to do is trot over the same turf in the same way everyone else is. So we're trying to keep it focused in the area that our film was, which was a little bit more about characters and relationships and stuff like that, and see where that takes us. But we're having a good time."

As for the release date, Bird said that "The Incredibles 2" will hit movie theaters before "Cars 3." This was earlier than expected, said the writer and director, given that initial plans was for "Cars 3" to be released first. Bird further commented that movies' release dates are "a little fluid" especially when films are being made so far ahead of its planned release. "Some films are tougher to come together and tough nuts to crack, and other ones comes together a little more quickly, and so I'm just going to work as fast as I can work well with a relatively small team because I like small teams better until you've got everything firmly figured out," Bird said.

Meanwhile, a poster of "The Incredibles 2" was displayed during the D23 Expo held in Anaheim last month, reported ComicBook.com. The teaser poster featured the movie's iconic yellow, black and orange colored logo. Other movie posters of upcoming films released during the Disney expo were "Cars 3" and "Toy Story 4."
