Ellen Page Stands for the LGBT Community: 'Stop devaluing our love'

Ellen Page is one of the Hollywood celebrities who attended the Toronto International Film Festival during which she talked about her movie "Freeheld," an upcoming movie about a lesbian couple fighting for domestic partner rights. In the movie, Page plays mechanic Stacie Andree alongside Julienne Moore who plays her police detective partner, Laurel Hester, who is diagnosed with terminal cancer.

According to Entertainment Weekly, she was interviewed by The Daily Beast and they talked about the current status of the gay rights movement and the viral video of Republican Ted Cruz about his views on LGBT rights.

Ellen Page told the Daily Beast, "I've seen multiple videos and read multiple quotes of Ted Cruz discussing gay issues, as well as Mike Huckabee, and it goes exactly as you'd expect. They don't answer the question. They say you're cutting them off when you try to ask the same question again because they're not answering it, because the reality is that they might be homophobic people. To me, it seems like they're homophobic people."

According to Entertainment Weekly, Page met Cruz at the Iowa State Fair while she was promoting her upcoming show on Vice in which she will be going around the world exploring LGBT culture.

She said further, "It can seem comical to people, and people can say, 'Well, Ted Cruz and Mike Huckabee, they're obviously not going to be president'. But no, these people have influence, and there are specific areas and communities where they're popular."

"I think of the most vulnerable. I think of kids that are gay growing up in that environment and the level of toxicity and shame, and it's so destructive. It causes a lot of pain. And the ripple effects of intolerance are catastrophic for everybody. Those are the points where it's like, 'This is not funny. Stop devaluing our love.'"

Page admitted that working on "Freeheld" encouraged her to come out as a lesbian in February 2014.
