Television Legend Norman Lear Lists Brentwood Compound for $55 Million

The highly-respected television producer and writer Norman Lear has placed his Brentwood estate in the market for a sweeping $55 million. The Los Angeles property comprises four parcels of land that sum up to a nearly 10 acre compound. The size of the main residence, which was built in the mid-1980s, is pegged by an L.A. County Tax Man at 13,320 square feet. It has seven bedrooms with eight full and four half bathrooms.

Listing details describe the entrance gallery to the main house as "dramatic." It features a formal living room with a fireplace, and dining rooms. It also has a "chef's kitchen," a double-height panelled library, and a professional screening room. Other luxuries and comforts consist of an exercise room and an art studio. The master suite has dual bathrooms and a private study. Offered as well are a pair of "sensational guesthouses," and a big staff and security offices.

Outside, one can be treated to its rolling lawns, extensive gardens, a pool with a keyhole shape, a separate spa, a gym, a tennis court with a trellis-shaded viewing terrace, a bathroom, and an outdoor kitchen. The garage can accommodate up to 35 cars.

According to available records, the Los Angeles property was bought by Lear and his long-time third wife, Lyn Davis Lear, in the early part of 1995 for $6.5 million. The estate in the mountains, found between Mandeville and Sullivan Canyons in Brentwood, is a proof of Lear's success in the industry, and was used to entertain political and Hollywood royalty.

Lear, no doubt, is one of the most influential figures in the industry and makers of television shows. He wrote and produced 1970s comedies which include "All in the Family" (for which he received a prestigious Peabody Award), "Good Times," "The Jeffersons," "Maude," "One Day at a Time," and "Sanford and Son." He has been a three-time Emmy awardee for his contributions to the sitcom genre and to show business in general.

Some speculate that Lear and his wife will be heading for a luxury apartment after the sale of this property.
