A Spoonful of Sugar: 'Disney' Set to Make Another 'Mary Poppins' Film

Disney continues to turn its old animated films into live action ones and it has worked out pretty well for them. With the success of live-action adaptations such as "Alice in Wonderland", "Cinderella", and "Into the Woods", Disney is now set to bring back "Mary Poppins" into the big screen.

According to cnn.com, Disney is now developing a new 'Poppins' movie 50 years after the release of its mother film. The new 'Poppins' film will be set 20 years after the story of the 1964 movie classic starred by Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. The first 'Mary Poppins' film told the story of a nanny who worked an unhappy banker's family during the pre- World War I England. The new movie will also be based by P.L. Travers' book series. The first book in the series was published on 1934 while its last installment was published in 1988.

Director of "Into the Woods" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides", Rob Marshall will direct the new film which will also be a musical. Scott Whitman, who worked on "Hairspray" and "Smash", and Marc Shaiman will be part of the songwriting team who will produce new songs as well as new score for the new 'Poppins' musical. David Magee of "Life of Pi" will be the one working on its screenplay.

Though Travers had a cranky relationship with Walt Disney because of the adaptation of the original, Disney is now working with her estate for the new movie.

John DeLuca and Marc Platt were the producers of "Into the Woods" and they will also produce the new Disney movie.

In a report by variety.com, the original film starred by Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke was a huge success with its $100 million dollar gross in the box office as well as 5 Oscar awards including Julie Andrews for Best Actress award.

Critics already have high expectations for the upcoming film as its director helmed "Into the Woods" that earned $199 million worldwide, where Meryl Streep earned an Oscar nomination.
