The pre-orders for the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus last weekend are "on pace'' to beat last year's record of 10 million units sold on the first weekend of in-store sales. The new phones which have significant improvements will go on sale in Apple Stores on September 25. "Customer response to iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus has been extremely positive and preorders this weekend were very strong around the world," says Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller. iPhone 6S Plus online demand has been stronger than expected.
Wired news said while demand for new iPhones remains high, analysts say sales are "on pace'' to beat last year's record because customers in China have been able to pre-order iPhones for the first time.
The momentum will depend on whether Apple can continue beating last year's record numbers, or if people who wanted new phones have already preordered them. For now, investors seem content as Apple stock rose as much as 2.68 percent on Monday, closing at $115.31.
According to IB Times, Apple Inc. reported that iPhone 6S is selling more than its predecessor, iPhone 6, based on preorders around the globe in its first weekend of sales. "We are on pace to beat last year's 10 million-unit first-weekend record when the new iPhones go on sale Sept. 25," Apple said in a statement provided to CNBC.
"Last year, Apple announced 4 million iPhone 6/6+ preorders in the first 24 hours vs. 2 million for the iPhone 5," analyst Gene Munster wrote in a research note issued Friday. "We expect around 5 million preorders for the iPhone 6S/6S+ in the first 24 hours is achievable and note that we wouldn't expect Apple to release a number if it were below last year's 4 million."
The initial sale of iPhone 6S this year include China, which was left out last year's preorder weekend with the iPhone 6. Analysts expect that the inclusion of China can be a strong factor for iPhone 6S sales.
