"Man of Steel 2" Rumors and Updates: Superman Returns With New Twists, Allies, and Villains

The second installment for the "Man of Steel" franchise isn't until 2019, but it is already generating plenty of buzz. The last time Superman took the big screen was in 2013, starring Henry Cavill. And while we will be seeing him again in the upcoming movie "Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice," many superfans are eager for a standalone movie.

Last month, Movie Web hinted that Warner Bros. is finally pushing the production for "Man of Steel 2," eyeing director George Miller to take the reins. This is good news for Superman fans, as the director is known for the success of the "Mad Max" franchise.

And just this Tuesday, a report from Heroic Hollywood dished out specific details about the movie. It will reportedly feature the cinematic debut of Brainiac, one of Superman's fiercest foes. According to the report, Brainiac may be looking for the genetic codex encrypted in Superman. This is the same codex General Zod was looking for in the first "Man of Steel" movie. Only this time, Brainiac isn't particularly after the hero. There is another Kryptonian survivor, and she may be Superman's strongest ally: Supergirl.

Supergirl is actually revealed in a comic book released before 2013's "Man of Steel." Her possible inclusion in the sequel will not have any connection with the "Supergirl" TV series, which debuts next month on CBS.

There's also another villain that is said to possibly jumping on board. Brainiac, in his search for the codex, will create a monster-creature named Bizarro.

If the rumors are to be believed, this confirms the plans of Warner Bros. to expand the entire DC universe, along with soon to be released "Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice" and a Batman trilogy starring Ben Affleck.

Warner Bros. has yet to give an official comment.
